Research

The research of the laboratory is divided into several areas.

Turbomachinery Flow calculations

LTT has developed highly sophisticated throughflow codes for ste- am turbine, gas turbine and axial compressor flow analysis. These tools have been used by some of major turbomachinery producers.

In more recent period, LTT has developed a number of compressor and turbine design tools that include the design mean line and throughflow calculations. These tools have already found their industrial application.

These systems now include flowpath and blading 3D geometry generation applying modern B-spline approach.

Heat Balance Calculation and Monitoring

Another important research area of LTT is the development of tools for steam and gas plant heat-balance calculations in nominal and off-design operation. Special attention is given to the modeling of physical behavior of individual components, such as condensers, feed water heaters and etc.

Such programs, when linked to a power plant measuring system, can be utilized for the online monitoring of plant performance and used to identify the non-properly operating components of the heat-balance scheme.

Simulation of Transient Performance

The most recent research effort of LTT is directed to the transient simulations of gas turbine plants. The simulation results are used to track the compressor transitional operating state during sudden variations of load, in order to predict possible occurance of surge. Another application is the prediction of magnitudes of temperature shocks to which the turbine structure components are exposed.
